Back in October travel photographer and writer, Kathryn Burrington, shared her favorite photographs from Bologna. In this week’s post she shares her images from the island of Sardinia. You can see more of her photographs and read about the wonderful time she had on a 6-day road trip around the island, on both her own blog, Travel With Kat, and on The Sardinia Blog.
1. We flew into Cagliari and took the opportunity to look around the old town and the cathedral, which dates back to the 13th Century. It’s a lovely area to explore with narrow cobbled streets and some pretty impressive views plus the cathedral itself, with a mixture of Gothic and Baroque features inside, is well worth visiting.
2. As we walked back down to the port, where we had parked the car, we can across this pretty street decorated in colourful bunting, a common sight I’m told whenever there is an excuse to celebrate.
3. One of the highlights of the trip was the wonderful drive between Santa Maria Navarrese on the east coast to Dorgali and then inland to Oliena in central Sardinia. Much of this was along the S125, a route popular with bikers.
The best time of day, to really make the most of the views, would be in the morning, so that the sun was behind you and driving in the opposite direction from us, starting at Dorgali and ending up in Santa Maria Navarrese, a lovely village by the sea. Note: photo is of Santa Maria Navarrese not the view on the road
4. We spent our last night on the island in a traditional agriturismo, Tenuta Pilastru, which served us the most amazing traditional Sardinian feast with a bottle of their own delicious wine. Plate after plate of scrumptious dishes were laid before us including spit roasted suckling pig and seadas, a light flaky pastry, stuffed with pecorino cheese and drenched in honey. It was all superb but then the food all week was outstanding.
5. Heaven in a cup is the only way to describe the hot chocolate we had in the charming village of San Pantaleo, in a lovely little restaurant with a backdrop of granite mountains. The chocolate was so thick you could stand a spoon in it!
The funny thing was though I had actually meant to order two cold coffees, shakerato, but they must have misunderstood my terrible accent and thought I’d said cioccolato but it turned out to be a great mistake!
6. On our last day we had lunch at the lovely hotel, Gabbiano Azzurro in Golfo Aranci. The views from here are truly stunning and sitting in their restaurant gazing out across the crystal clear, aquamarine water was the perfect end to a wonderful and very memorable week.
Thanks Kathryn for sharing these wonderful photos of Sardinia. We’re going to have to start making plans for our trip there.
