Favorite Reads on Italy (FRI) is a weekly roundup featuring interesting articles, fascinating experiences, and handy resources that I’ve come across that week.
This week’s roundup features walking into the richest bank vault, St. Francis manuscripts, revelation of childhood in ancient Rome, truffles galore in Piedmont, pumpkin recipes, and more.
Culture and Travel
Childhood in ancient Rome by MailOnline.com – Fascinating to read what childhood was like in ancient Rome and it might come as a surprise that they wealthy Roman children were enrolled in a youth organisation in order to learn to be good citizens too”.
Saving one of Italy’s oldest cities from crumbling away by BBC News – While the crumbling buildings in Naples add to the charm of this city, the neglect of some buildings that represent its magnificent past is of concern.
Fancy walking into the richest bank vault in the world by Sicilian Godmother – Now there’s some serious bling in here but that’s just one part of the story. Many of the coins here date back at least two thousand years old.
St. Francis Manuscripts Headed to U.S., in First Trip Out of Italy in 700 Years by New York Times – If you are in New York City, don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to see “3 medieval manuscripts of the 19 artifacts from the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Assisi”.
Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate in Puglia by Wandering Italy – Taking notes for our next visit to Puglia. This will certainly be in our itinerary.
Food and Drinks
Pumpkin pie with mascarpone by Domenica Cooks – I love pumpkin pie but the same sentiments are not shared by my in-laws. I have stopped making pumpkin pie for our Thanksgiving lunch as I’m lucky if even a slice gets eaten. However, I might try this recipe this year and hopefully it will win them over.
Creamy pumpkin lasagna by Madonna del Piatto – I love pumpkin and lasagna, and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, this might make an appearance on our table.
Truffle Breaks in Piedmont, Italy by Huffington Post UK – We were in Monforte d’Alba in Piedmont this summer and missed the truffle galore this autumn but we got a taste of this delicacy at La Torricella which was mentioned in the article.
Truffle Hunting in Alba by Erica Firpo via Huffington Post – As we are on the topic of truffles, this is one experience I am planning to be part of next year. It’s a dirty job but somebody has got to do it.
Life in Italy
The new pedestrian path from Acicastello to Acitrezza by Lost in Sicilia – In Italy simple projects can take a lifetime to be completed. This pedestrian path “falls short of expectations” but is better than nothing.
