Favorite Reads on Italy (FRI) is a weekly roundup published on Fridays featuring interesting articles, fascinating experiences, and handy resources that I’ve come across that week.
This week’s roundup features places off-the-beaten in Sicily, Basilicata, Tuscany, and Puglia as well as glimpse of life in Rome.Culture and Travel
What people are photographing in the Uffizi by ArtTrav – If you think it’s all about selfies, well you are wrong. Read the post to see what’s getting camera time in the Uffizi. If you are interested, here’s our interview with Alexandra of ArtTrav who is the author of the Uffizi Art History Guide.
Hiking to the “Garden of Gods” in Basilicata by Green Holiday Italy – I’m always excited to read about hikes and the fact that this one is in the region of Basilicata, one region I am longing to explore, it certainly got my attention.
Cava d’Ispica and the Museo Cavallo d’Ispica Lost in Sicilia – Having a penchant for places off-the-beaten-path, I am making a note of these places near Modica, Sicily.
Five things to see on the Tremiti Islands by Mix Oil and Water – Summer maybe over but it’s never too early to start planning for the next summer vacation. This is an amazing getaway!
Napoleon’s Italian idyll: six reasons to exile yourself to Elba by Telegraph Travel – Talking about next summer, you could find yourself very happy here.
An urbanist’s guide to Rome: ‘Patience and humour are essential; miracles are a useful optional’ by Guardian – Great read and while I do love this city, I couldn’t agree more with having santa pazienza to live in Rome.
Discover Certaldo: Hometown of Messer Boccaccio by Italy Magazine – A small medieval town in Tuscany that is worth a visit. Though often in the shadows of more renowned Tuscan towns, and therefore you’ll find few visitors here, Certaldo exudes an authentic charm.
Food and Drinks
In Umbria, an Italian Olive Oil Worth the Accolades by The New York Times – If you have never tried newly pressed olive, then add it to you list of must-dos. We have friends who have an olive grove in Umbria and always look forward to the time of year when we buy freshly pressed olive oil from them. The intense flavors with that tinge of peppery taste drizzled on bread is simply divine.
Cremona: Good Eats by Wandering Italy – Looking for a good place to eat in Cremona, then check out this place.
Life in Italy
Things Italian Parents Do That Make Brooklyn Parents Cringe (and Vice Versa) by The Cut – Just having celebrated my niece’s birthday party, I would agree that’s when the junk food makes an appearance in their lives, Nutella-filled sandwiches, potato chips, Coca-cola, but thankfully no Duncan Hines–type cakes.
