Favorite Reads on Italy (FRI) is a weekly roundup published on Fridays featuring interesting articles, fascinating experiences, and handy resources that I’ve come across that week.
This week’s roundup features a conversation about Rome, rules for visiting Rimini, a slideshow of the best street food in Italy, guide to Milan, the religion of soccer in Italy and more.
Culture and Travel
Romance and Pasta But Not Enough Bike Lanes: A Conversation About Planning and Rome by The Cut: Great interview with two Rome-based architects who keep it real about Rome.
The Rhythm of Ortigia by Erica Firpo via Fathom Away – Sicily makes for a lovely summer escape and Erica shows us how to live it slow in Ortigia. Read more about Erica’s love affair with Sicily as she takes us to Cefalu on Italy “Show and Tell”.
Sophia Loren, Italy’s national icon, turns 80 with book of memoirs by Reuters – She is the eternal diva and the article shares interesting snippets from her book of memoirs.
Tuscans that Made it Big by Girl in Florence – Fun and insightful read. How many are you familiar with on this list?
6 Rules for visiting Rimini by Elizabeth Minchilli – Rimini doesn’t have the best reputation but here are some tips to best enjoy the city.
A Roman’s Guide to Falling in Love with Milan by Arlene Gibbs via Fathom Away – I couldn’t agree more with Arlene that if you live in Rome, the “unwritten Italian law, means that Milan is a city I shouldn’t enjoy”. So much so that I have not step foot in this city (yes, I am ashamed but that will hopefully change next month). I’ve been told that Milan is just the Duomo and the Galleria but there is really so much more to the city than that and I’m looking forward to exploring it soon.
Emperor Augustus frescoes opened to public for first time in Rome by Japan Times – Great news that this complex is now open to visitors. Numbers will be limited and guided visits will last only 15 minutes. Don’t miss out when in Rome.
Food and Drinks
Massimo Bottura: The mercurial chef who reinvented Italian food by The Guardian – Beautiful read about courage, hard-work, and while known for his creative Italian dishes, it’s also about staying true to his roots.
The Best Street Food in Italy by CNTraveler – Here are many of our favorite things!
Life in Italy
Soccer Mom by The American – I don’t have kids but I can relate to this. My husband and my brother-in-law are Laziale and when my nieces had inklings of supporting Roma, thanks to their friends, there was a campaign by the father and uncle to make sure that didn’t happen.
