I am thrilled to have Clare Farrell, a part-time traveler who has a penchant for European city breaks, share her experience on the Amalfi Coast, one of our favorite places in Italy.
6 Favorite Photos from the Amalfi Coast
Every now and again you find yourself in a place that quite simply doesn’t feel real; the kind of place that makes you feel lucky to be alive. The Amalfi Coast is like that. It’s movie Italy. It’s the Italy you see in timeless films, the Italy you dream about.
But there’s nothing make believe about this staggeringly beautiful stretch of Italian coastline. It’s just a part of the world no photo will ever truly do justice to. They say seeing is believing, and if you manage to see the Amalfi Coast, you’ll never look back.
I visited the Amalfi Coast with my husband last year on a day trip from Sorrento. It was the perfect way to celebrate our third wedding anniversary.
1. Buildings tumble down the cliffs in the town of Positano like a colourful waterfall. Being here is like living out a fantasy where you jump into a postcard and everything comes to life.
2. The coastline as seen from high up in the town of Ravello. It’s the ideal spot to enjoy what is definitely one of the most amazing coastal views in the world.
3. The town of Amalfi itself is more lovely than I could have imagined. I hadn’t given it much thought before we visited, but it was a wonderful place to wander around, admiring the views.
4. The Cathedral of St Andrew in Amalfi was an unexpectedly grand sight, standing tall above the Piazza Duomo in the centre of the town. It dates back to the 11th century and a visit inside is not to be missed.
5. Lemons are everywhere on the Amalfi Coast and in the surrounding areas. Their fragrance floats in the air everywhere you go and some of them are almost as big as your head! This also means there’s no shortage of Limoncello, the perfect drink to round of a long, leisurely Italian lunch.
6. I spotted this scooter as we strolled around Ravello eating gelato. I just wanted to take it for a ride! Truthfully though, I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to drive along the Amalfi Coast myself. And anyway, if I was concentrating on the roads, I wouldn’t be able to take in those views!
