This week Maria Pasquale shares some fabulous photos from her summer vacation in Tropea, Calabria. Maria, born and raised in Melbourne, Australia to Italian parents, now lives in Rome. She blogs at HeartRome and manages marketing & social media for Eating Italy Food Tours.
On this gray and cold day in Rome, the photos bring about a sense of summer, and if you are looking for a summer destination this year, check out Tropea.
6 Favorite Photos from Tropea, Calabria
My second time to Tropea, Calabria only confirmed that many more of my southern Italian summers will be spent here. The south of the south of Italy is intriguing, boasts many untouched beaches, is warmly hospitable and offers food to die for.
1. Cipolle rosse di Tropea: this Calabrian staple is famous for its Tropean origins and features heavily in the local cuisine. Just delicious.
2. Tropea seaside: You don’t have to walk far from the historical centre of Tropea for beach but be prepared for quite a few stairs – totally worth it and the pristine waters will cool you down.
3. Capo Vaticano: referred to by many Italians as the ‘Caribbean of Italy’ and they’re not wrong. When I arrived at Capo Vaticano (located about 20 minutes from Tropea) I and saw the turquoise waters I was blown away.
4. Brioche con gelato: No southern Italian is complete without a brioche filled with gelato. My favorite (after much sampling) was nocciola (hazelnut) & gianduia (chocolate hazelnut praline).
5. Pedalò time: the best way to experience the amazing waters of Capo Vaticano is to hire a pedalò (a paddle boat). This was one of my favorite days – sun, fun and friends!
6. Tartufo di Pizzo: Don’t leave Calabria without trying one of these. Famous from the town, Pizzo, you can find them in Tropea and beyond. Available in a range of flavors, I just about tried them all!
Thanks Maria for being part of Italy “Show and Tell” and sharing a beautiful gem that’s off-the-beaten path.

Great post, I am so excited for our upcoming Calabria/Basilicata trip this summer and that brioche is calling my name.
Hi Georgette,
How fun and I look forward to following along! How many days will you be spending in those two regions?
