After our visit to Sant’Antimo abbey, we decided to make our way to the town of Montalcino for lunch. It was getting late, and we knew that we would be lucky to find a restaurant that still served lunch.
However, I had done some research prior and had listed another place for a quick bite in case we didn’t make it in time.
Place to Eat in Montalcino: Osteria di Porta al Cassero
As we wanted to visit the Fortezza di Montalcino while in town, we decided to have lunch at Osteria di Porta al Cassero. We got there after 2.30pm and were lucky to find that they were still serving lunch.
The place was packed and though it was late, tables were still all occupied except for one. After we were seated, another couple entered and were told there would be a 10-15 minute wait as tables were finishing up their desserts and coffee.
Judging from the crowd, we felt we had made the right choice. The place is simple and far from anything fancy. However, the prices are very reasonable and they also have an extensive wine list – obviously!
We started with an appetizers of crostini misti, and while I was undecided about the primo, I finally decided on the pinci al sugo. The pinci are handmade and the dish was excellent. Service was also prompt and friendly.
When we were only on appetizers, I saw orders of panna cotta with a sauce of berries being brought to other tables. I had been eyeing them and knew I would end the meal on a sweet note. It was the perfect ending to the meal and we were happy with the entire meal: service, food quality, and value for money. I’d be happy to recommend this place to friends and family.

Other places to eat in Montalcino
L’Angolo – This would be an alternative where we would just grab a quick bite. It’s right in front of the Fortezza.
Enoteca La Fortezza – The place feels like it caters to tourists and there was a still a good crowd here when we came to buy tickets to climb up and walk around the battlements of the Fortezza. While I didn’t see any menu listed on their website, I remembered seeing food being served.
Another tip when in Montalcino. Don’t miss…..
Going up to the battlements of the Fortezza. You can buy the tickets from the cashier in the Enoteca, and the ticket costs €4 for adults and €2 for children.
It’s was worth that and more as the views were spectacular! On a clear day, like the one we had, you had a fabulous panoramic view of the area.
